What To Expect From Pests This Winter
The National Pest Control Association recently released it’s Winter 2022 predictions. For the Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas regions they say that “Below-average fall temps could drive occasional invaders like boxelder bugs into structures early in search of shelter. Similarly, prepare for an increase in mouse activity …” and has experts expecting a pest-packed winter due to bitter cold temperatures.
Boxelder Bugs & Other Insects
Boxelder bugs can be a huge nuisance when they get into a home. They will leave a smelly odor or rust-colored stains around your home.
Cockroaches will seek out small warm areas close to a food source. Warm and moist places like under the kitchen sink or in trash cans are among their favorite spots. Once they find their way indoors, they can trigger allergies or spread bacteria.
Spiders will enter in crevices in doorways or walls, but often indicate a bigger problem, as they act as a warning sign that you may have a more substantial pest problem. If they are in your home thriving, that means their food source (other insects) is as well.
What You Can Do
Milberger Pest Control has been helping homeowners with pest issues since 1936. We suggest having quarterly services as well as following these best practices for pest prevention:
- Trim back trees to bar rodents from easy access to the underside of your roof overhang.
- Declutter the basement, attic, and any utility rooms so as to eliminate any potential nesting grounds.
- Examine the fascia board along the roofline, replacing any areas of rotted wood.
- Repair loose mortar and replace worn weather-stripping around all windows and doors.
- Store food in sealed containers and keep crumbs off the floor.
- Seal any and all cracks or gaps on the home exterior with a silicone-based caulk.
- Store firewood at least 20 feet from the home, not only off the ground but also covered.
- Avoid ice dams by using a roof rake to dissipate potentially problematic accumulations of snow.
- Hire a professional sweep to clean the stack, inspect the flue, and install a cap over the chimney.
